Understand the estimate

Self-employment tax generally applies at $400 in net SE earnings: 12.4% Social Security up to the 2026 $184,500 wage base, plus 2.9% Medicare. An additional 0.9% Medicare tax applies above filing-status thresholds. Half of regular SE tax reduces income for this estimate. Income tax uses 2026 brackets and the standard deduction.

Not a return, refund promise, or payment submission. Excludes W-2 wages (including a spouse’s), credits, QBI, itemized deductions, capital gains, retirement/health-insurance deductions, AMT, NIIT and state/local tax. Joint calculations assume all profit belongs to one self-employed spouse. Separate businesses or uneven income require a personalized calculation.

Your next steps

  1. Update your income and expense forecast throughout the year.
  2. Review 2026 IRS Form 1040-ES for eligibility, credits and payment timing.
  3. Pay directly through official IRS payment options. TaxShifterPro does not collect these payments.
  4. Find a credential-reviewed professional for mixed income, deductions or state taxes.
